San Francisco is known for having a fierce sex worker movement, but not many people realize how integral the business of sex was and is to the history and shaping of the City. From a business-savvy expat French jade, to strippers who hold the picket line like Teamsters, meet revolutionary San Francisco whores past and present in this film of a great street theater (and cardio) event! Some featured personages: famous madame Ah Toy and her parlor of sing-song girls; former slave turned sex entrepreneur Mary Ellen Pleasant, the proceeds of whose house of ill-repute went to the Underground Railroad; Sally Stanford, whore, madame, and mayor of Sausalito; JP Marat, charismatic hustler and gay/trans youth activist; and the inimitable Valerie Solanis teaching on her “SCUM Manifesto.” (38:25 min-San Francisco, 2011)
Start Time: 20:00
Date: 2011-05-27

Girl Talk: A Cis and Trans Woman Dialogue

Queer cisgender (i.e., nontransgender) women and queer transgender
women are allies, friends, support systems, lovers, and partners to
each other. We are interested in putting on a show about relationships
of all kinds – sexual and/or romantic, chosen and blood family,
friendships, support networks, activist alliances — between
transgender queer women and cisgender queer women. These relationships
and activist alliances are close to both of our hearts, and integral
to our feminist and queer politics. We are both deeply invested in
fostering artistic and activist alliances between cis and trans women.
(We’ve also both been impressed with the work about the intersections
between cis queer men’s and trans men’s communities that we’ve seen
Kirk Read curate, for example — “Ding Dong,” “The New Brotherhood.”
The queer women’s equivalent is long overdue!)
Date: 2011-03-24

In my hometown of Baltimore last month, I experienced something for the first time in a loooong time: waking up to snow falling out of every window in my mother’s house. My mouth didn’t close for 20 minutes, and I kept saying “Oh my GOD!!!”

Now that I just returned from Aspen to visit my art-wife, Lula Mae Day and her beloved, Talbott Walker, I’m old hat at snow. We even stood on giant “icicles”, big frozen sheets in the middle of the Roaring Fork River. We wrote songs, took footage for a new video in the Winter Collaboration series, I learned to dance ochos at Tango class, and Lula taught me to crochet. We sat in the biggest hot springs in the world, looking through the steam at the snow covered mountains, just like convalescing Victorian protagonists. And yet it felt like not much at all, the perfect way to make art, just flowing because that is what we do together without stress or distractions.

Anyway, Baltimore. My beloved Grouper, Tim Kreider, infamous creator of The Pain- When Will It End came down from his turret in Brooklyn to write in his undisclosed location on the Chesapeake and cannoli taste-test with me. He is my Grouper because I am his #1 Groupie, a dynamic that grew out of my adolescent adoration of his comics and ignorance that cartoonists rarely have groupies.

So! We met Joe McLeod from the City Paper at Club Charles one night for Tim’s interview, since he has a new book of political cartoons coming out. Which will be followed by a ‘book-book’ with no drawings at all.

You can read about it: http://citypaper.com/news/columns/the-pain-never-ends-1.1108733
and if you live in Baltimore, see him present the book at Atomic Books (one of the long-lasting coolest places in Baltimore and shining star of the painfully lean selection of accessible and appealing bastions of weird when I was a desperate teenager, which also now carries Bend Over Magazine) on February 25.

In France and some other European countries it is common practice to be legally denied the right to officially change gender (which makes things like banking, travel, working outside of the country, etc., hell for trans people, as well as their sense of personal identity) without a doctor’s certification that you have been surgically sterilized.

Trans people there have even more at stake, agency over the anatomy and fertility of their own bodies, than issues of stigma, phobia and visibility. Besides changing the sterilization protocol (its not a law, per se, but what a committee of doctors have recommended so judges never grant official gender changes without it) the goal of the groups and individuals marching in Existrans is to take gender identity “disorders” out of the next issue of the DSM.

Existrans is an annual march in Paris, and the second largest GLBTQ event after Pride.
